Your first schedule on day one. No history required.

No months of past rotas. No till or POS feed. No sales forecasts. Shifthand builds a fair week from your staff list and the hours you open, on the first day you use it.

How it works

Up and running in an afternoon.

Bring your current schedule, or start from scratch.

1

Add your team & coverage

Type your people in, or upload a past schedule to seed the roster from it. The upload saves typing; it is not a prerequisite. Then set what each part of your business needs.

2

Generate the week

One click produces a fair schedule, and names any shift it could not fill. Pin what you want to keep and re-run until it fits.

3

Publish to your team

Staff get their shifts and manage their own availability. Every published week is saved.

In their own words

What the big schedulers build from.

Not our opinion of them. Their own pages, quoted as of September 2026, so you can go and check them before you believe a word of this.

7shifts

As of September 2026, their own restaurant scheduling page describes its scheduling tools as:

  • Auto-fill shifts based on past schedules and availability
  • Use historical sales and labor data to build more accurate schedules
  • Predict staffing needs based on sales forecasts

Source: the vendor’s own restaurant scheduling page, read 27 September 2026.

Homebase

As of September 2026, their own page says their scheduling assistant will Build schedules instantly using team availability, work history, and time-off data.

On their pricing page, the AI-powered Scheduling Assistant is listed on the Plus plan: one tier above their entry paid plan, two above their free one.

Shifthand

A list of your staff, and the hours you open. That is the whole prerequisite.

  • No published history. Nothing to wait weeks for.
  • No POS, no till feed, no sales projections.
  • No wage data needed to build a week.

It is a constraint solver, not a model that learns from your past, so there is no training window to fill: it works the week you hand it, on the first day you hand it one.

And when the people you have cannot cover the hours you set, it names the shifts it could not fill, and why, before you publish. No software can invent staff.

Source: this product, and the setup it asks you for. Note that the demo above is a business with months of its own history already loaded, so it does not show you the empty start. The no-history claim is about the account you would make.

Straight answers

And what Shifthand is not.

Five things worth knowing before you spend anything.

It cannot invent staff. If the people on your roster cannot cover the hours you have set, it names the shifts that are short and why, rather than quietly filling them. That is a real answer, and sometimes it is the answer.
It is a scheduler, not a back office. On our roadmap No payroll, no hiring, no POS or till feed. There is a time clock (a PIN kiosk, punches and a weekly timesheet) because the week is what it measures. We do fewer things than an all-in-one, on purpose. We do the week.
It reads split shifts. It does not generate them. Upload a week with a 10:00–14:00 and a 17:00–21:00 on one person and Shifthand reads it: the hours are summed from the two blocks, the unpaid gap between them is not counted as worked time, and the split is scored when we check ourselves against your history. A week Shifthand builds gives each person at most one shift a day, so it will not hand that split back to you.
PDF import is beta. Excel and CSV are solid. While PDF is in beta a scanned or unusually laid-out one may come back partly read. We say so at the time, rather than handing you a half-empty roster to discover later.
There is no free tier. As of September 2026, at least one of the big schedulers has a free plan for a small team at one location, and a flat plan that costs less than ours. If that is you, compare before you pay. We would rather you knew that now than found it in month two. Our 14-day free trial is not a free plan: when it ends, generating and publishing schedules need a subscription.
Features

Everything you need to run the schedule.

Not a blank calendar. An engine that fills it, within your rules.

Auto-generated weeks

Set what you need. It builds the week.

Say how many people you need and when. Shifthand fills the week from the people you have, and when it cannot fill a shift, it names that shift and why, instead of leaving you a hole to find.

Supports configurable scheduling guardrails

Nobody quietly carries every weekend.

Balances weekends and hours, respects time off, and enforces the limits in your own rules: a pay-period overtime ceiling, and a weekly hours cap and per-shift limits for anyone you mark as a minor.

Those are your numbers, not a compliance check. Shifthand does not know your jurisdiction’s child labor law, does not check ages, and does not enforce school-day rules. Nothing here is legal advice.

It refuses to publish a week that breaks your rules. You can override that deliberately, and we write down who did and what it cost.

Staff self-service
